GDC Talk: Intrinsic & Extrinsic Player Motivation (March 2012)

GDC Talk: Intrinsic & Extrinsic Player Motivation (March 2012)

Presented by Scott Rigby at Game Developers Conference – San Francisco, CA  (March 2012)

Slide deck from Scott Rigby’s (President of Immersyve) GDC talk, Intrinsic & Extrinsic Player Motivation: Design Implications & Player Retention. This presentation is on understanding player motivation at a deeper level — moving past simple “Intrinsic” and “Extrinsic” distinctions and reviewing research and data that shows that motivation is best understood as a continuum of internalization of value, based on providing and facilitating basic need satisfaction. Lots of game examples, along with best (and some worst) practices involving rewards, “controlling” mechanics, and other design features.
